Carefully Consider Job Costing
By: Matthew Stanton

Job costing in a construction project needs to either meet the arranged budget or, if possible, less than that. As much as possible it should not go over what has been agreed upon. Or at least there is room for consideration for cases where it cannot be avoided. The company should be flexible with such changes to avoid more problems. It is important to make sure that the right people plan this carefully. This is the first phase of the project.

Job costing involve not only with employees and construction workers but also with equipments and materials used for the whole project. Equipment use and cost are calculated on the amount of hours and cost per hour it was used against the total procurement cost of the equipment. This assures that a construction company will get the exact value if not greater from equipment. This still goes with rented construction equipments in case they do not have their own and would need to rent one. Depending on the calculation the result will be used for the same purpose.

Materials are calculated too to get its value. Cost of materials would need to take utmost importance so the construction company would stay within the required budget. Careful assessment of materials would need to be done prior to purchase to assure that nothing will be wasted or left unused. During the planning stage of the project the kind and costs of materials are considered for all the phases of construction. The cost should be worth the overall gain of the entire project.

Office employees involve specifically on a project as well as construction workers are also included in job costing. Each person has their own data that takes a big part on the entire cost of the construction project. The hours worth against the number of hours worked against the cost per hour needs to be exactly calculated to get the correct total. Each employee has their own unique cost or rate depending on their job description. This would also include the engineers, managers and all high ranking employees involved. The total will be associated with the entire manpower used for the project. Manpower is allocated its own budget as well.

Job costing is important so a construction company will know how much the whole project will cost. This should not be taken lightly since the purpose of the construction business, or any business for that matter, depends on the accurate and careful planning of its expenses. It would be useless to go in to business in haste without careful consideration of all aspects that involves the money that needs to be spent and cost of everything, the expertise of each employee and worker, and proper strategy. Do not underestimate the power of job costing in your business.
